OUCH! Stitches on the tongue!

Last Sunday (Jan 7, '07) Micah was out on an adventure walk at Grandma and Grandpa's house and they were having a great time pushing over dead and rotten trees. Unfortunately when one of the trees fell down the back end of it bounced back up and hit Micah under the chin. Micah fell down and then the tree landed on top of him. When Aaron grabbed Micah from under the tree his mouth was pouring with blood.

We rushed him to the hospital - a 45 minute drive from Grandma and Grandpa's. HDH didn't have the proper staffing to fix him up, so they transferred us over to KGH where Micah was put under for the 'operation' to stitch up his tongue. They put 3 stitches on the top, and 1 on the bottom (since the hole went right through). Fast dissolving stitches were used so that he wouldn't have to go through the trauma again to have them out. They warned us that the drug that they used on Micah to put him to sleep would cause him to have some pretty crazy dreams. The first thing that Micah said when he woke up from the operation was, "it was awesome!". Micah's injury occurred at 3:15pm and we were finally released from the hospital at 9pm.

The mouth heals very quickly. The doctor who put Micah under told us that the tongue would be mostly healed after one week. Micah's injury occurred on Sunday, and this picture was taken today (Thursday) so you can imagine how much better it looks now than it did! I told Micah that I wanted to take this picture so that when he's a grown up he can look back at this picture and say 'cool'! Does anyone else have weird parents who have taken pictures of some pretty gruesome injuries? I was actually disappointed when mom told me that she deleted the video from her camera of the tree falling over that hit Micah in the face.

I've always said - and I still say - that I would rather my kids climb trees and break an arm, then to never climb trees! The day after Micah's ordeal, I turned on the radio and the first thing I heard was, 'We have to accept that injuries and accidents are a fact of life'!! I hope that Micah and Lizzy can go on many more adventure walks in the woods around Grandma and Grandpa's house (and maybe even push over some more rotten old trees)!

Oh my goodness, what madness! I must admit it would have been interesting to watch that video, not that I don't sympathize with Micah or anything. I'm sure even he would find it funny a few years from now. Glad to hear he's recovering well and enjoyed his time "under".

I would have loved to have had video of some gruesome accident when I was a kid... The gross-out factor is much better than just having pictures.

Then again, I sympathize with mom on that one. Had I been there and seen it (and had a grandma-brain), I'd probably have deleted it too.

I like your attitude Megs - back in the saddle, do it all over again, live life and enjoy it.

The first nose bleed Michaela ever had was a real gusher. This was my reaction....

"Michaela! Oh my gosh.....Don't move, I have to get the camera!"

I think she'll really enjoy looking back on that picture when she's older. It was priceless!
