The best driveway ever : With Parts 1, 2 and 3!!!

Almost ever since Meghan and I have been married, we've dreamt of living simply. Although time travel isn't possible yet, we've often shared that if we could we would love to live in the late 1800's, as a pioneer. You know, Dr. Quinn Medicine woman style. Providing for life with the sweat of your hands, working with God's amazing creation, and just... living. Yes, it would be hard work. In fact, probably too hard for my soft mushy body, and mind that (already born to always want more) have been re-wired for faster than instant gratification.

So, where's this rambling going? To the country my dear watson. Although it's still very early days, we've been exploring the possibility of moving out into the country, building a house (a straw bale house), establishing a farm, and living as sustainablely as possible. Oh ya, and adopting animals along the way and letting them share the land with us. (a cow or two, chickens, some horses, and any other animal we can find to hang out with us).

I'm watching MLS and checking out any possibilities that look remotely interesting. (workable land, woodlot, and lots of extra room to play, dream, grow...) The last two days I've actually started visiting the properties. A visit so far, entails me and the kids going on a snowshoeing adventure with Cassie. I pull them in the toboggan, walk the property, chat about it, and explore, play and have a great time. Yesterday's property turned out to be a real junker. In fact, if you wanted to get lots of cedar mulch, it's the property for you (acres and acres of cedar brush...) But we had a great time nonetheless.

Today was quite different. It was truly magical. We've taken video, and I'm just quickly putting it together, but here's a taste.

The best driveway ever.

So what's next? Visiting lots of other sites. And then just dreaming and planning the sites. Drawings, dreams, desires, and ... downpayments. :)

I think Micah did a great job of filming this segment. And it's really special listening to him interact with the imagined audience. Good Job, Micah!

Keep that camera up! It's crazy, but I find that when I'm walking and filming, i keep the camera low, but the audience doesn't really get a sense of where we're going.

This is a very wonderful way to build memories -- simple family walk in the woods with the dog and sled and kids.

Showing us the map and the steps along the way was really cool and an effective way to 'take us along'.

Somewhere in there, at the end of "the best driveway ever" I'd want a log cabin (or bale construction with a log exterior -- we have the land -- with a few rooms, a nice big wood burning fireplace, and high speed internet. We'd also need a couple of workshops attached; one for my junk, and the better one for Jean's ceramics' studio. Whence will we get all the power?

Aaron, I love your creativity and zeal for doing new and crazy things (crazy in other people's opinion). New things, both in and out of the box happen because you're able and willing to push forward and see things on the horizon when most people don't even see a horizon.

Finally, happy birthday, Aaron, today, Jan 20. We were recalling where I was at your age. Just getting started in Regina. God bless and keep you strong in Christ.

Thanks for all the positive stuff Dad. Going beyond the horizon is what I do best.

It's so much fun having the kids involved because they feel like a part of things too. They've really warmed up to the idea that I might end up being a farmer.

I've also shared parts of the dream at work, and lots of stuff are moving forward in a nice slow planned meditated fashion.

I have 3 or 4 more sites to visit in the kingston area, and hope to do the same thing.

The next step will be to visit the sites with the owners and ask them lots of questions about the land.

And then to ask neighbouring farmers.

And then to start doing planning about site usage in particular. Sketches, scale drawings, dreams. And then figuring out costing... And then I guess checking out things like bylaws (windmills, solar, zoning), and how the potential neighbours feel about that sort of stuff.

All in all very very very exciting.
