This summer was a big one for firsts, including both kids biking without training wheels. We got a really good technique from a friend, and within 20 minutes, Lizzie was biking on her own!
The main idea is to learn balancing before peddling.
1. take off training wheels and pedals. 2. find a sloped road/driveway. 3. have kid sit on bike with feet on ground. 4. kid "walks" the bike down the hill. 5. repeat the walking until they have good control over the bike.then while the bike is moving, kid lifts feet off ground for a couple feet and the bike should coast down the hill. repeat until they can keep their feet off the ground the whole time until the bike stops. 6. put pedals back on. kid just keeps feet on pedals (no peddaling) and coasts down hill. they will naturally start pedalling.
Thats it! Its long winded, but works. Micah was a slower learner. After all that he was still pretty tippy. So I ran beside him and had my hand on his neck. Just that reassuring hand was all he needed to balance.
